Cummins Cogeneration in Nigeria CHP PPA

UK-based Cummins Cogeneration Ltd has signed a 300 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Nigerian power producer Sapele Power, the two firms announced this week.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cummins will build a gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant in the country. Once completed, the plant is expected to supply around 3 TWh per year to state-owned Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET).

According to a statement by Anthony Onoh (pictured, right), chair of Sapele Power, the firms look to commission the project’s first phase by July, and a second phase by December 2017.

The deal comes on the heels of another recent African agreement for Cummins, under which the firm will build a 300 MW plant in Beyin, Ghana.

At the signing ceremony in London, UK, Cummins chair Deepak Khilnani (pictured, left) said: ‘This project will be operated using Cummins Combined Heat and Power (CHP) lean burn gas generator sets, which emit up to five times less nitrogen oxide than comparable diesel generator sets and near-zero particulate matter’.
